GFS Global Cross Section

How to use
  • Draw a section: drag anywhere on the map away from the arrow (hold Shift to snap the bearing to 22.5°). The section follows the great circle between the two points.
  • Move it: drag the triangles to move the end points, or the shaft to translate the whole section.
  • Pan and zoom: right-drag, Ctrl+drag or two fingers to pan; Ctrl+wheel or pinch to zoom. The region selector jumps to the main areas.
  • Read values: hover the mouse over the figure and the values at that point appear below it. On a touch device, press and hold (about half a second) instead; you can then slide your finger to move the readout. It stays after you lift your finger and clears the next time you touch the figure.
  • Save the image: click the figure (press and release without dragging) to download it.
  • Save the data: "Save data" writes the forecast hour on screen to a single .wmsec file. Load it later from "Your data" → file, and the same sections and maps can be drawn even after the data has left the server.
  • Settings: remembered in this browser automatically. "Share URL" puts the current settings in the address bar; "Reset settings" restores the defaults.
  • Resolution for GFS sections improves as tiles arrive: the section is first drawn from the 1.0° grid, then replaced along its path — model levels (13 km) for forecast hours 3–12, the 0.25° pressure levels for 15–72. What is in use now is shown at the top right of the section.
  • Past GFS data is coarsened: once a valid time is more than 24 hours old, its model levels are averaged to 26 km and its 0.25° pressure tiles are dropped, leaving the 1.0° grid — the same detail as the archive. The runs stay selectable for the usual five days.
  • The map for GFS is drawn at 1.0°. The resolution is shown at the top left of the map, next to the section's own figure at the top right.
  • Model levels: 77 terrain-following levels are shown. Some low-level levels in the original GFS model are omitted.
  • MSM is 0.125°×0.1° on 16 levels; relative humidity is published only up to 300 hPa (above that, 10 % is assumed for the equivalent potential temperature). It carries no cloud water.
  • The archive holds near-analyses: for each valid time, the shortest-range forecast available. Its model levels are coarsened to 26 km, the same as forecast data older than 24 hours. It starts on 21 September 2026 (MSM from the same day).
  • The old archives (GFS old, MSM old) start on 4 November 2024 and cover Japan only, on pressure levels. Their 3 h precipitation has just four classes, and they carry no 10 m wind or precipitable water.
  • The page draws from quantised, compressed data. Values are rounded to keep the downloads small, so they can differ slightly from the raw model output. The cursor read-out shows a range that includes that rounding.
